A DRINKING CLUB WITH A RUNNING PROBLEM

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

We are a local chapter of an international social running organization known as the Hash House Harriers. There are more than 2,000 chapters spanning all seven continents. We are open to runners and walkers with a sense of humor and adventure. You must be at least 21 years old to participate, due to our long-standing traditions of beer, bawdy songs, and nicknames. We hash (run) in every kind of weather throughout the year. We follow trails that are generally three to five miles in length and conclude the trail with beer and a traditional ceremony.

HOW WE GOT STARTED

Hashing began in Malaysia in 1938 when a group of British colonial officers and expatriates began meeting to run, in a fashion patterned after the traditional British paper chase or "hare and hounds". There were three things that made this Malaysian iteration different: it was designed for adults, it was non-competitive, and it was followed by beer. The first hashers ran trails through jungles, tin flats, palm olive groves, and the city of Kuala Lumpur. They concluded trails with beer and a good curry. Our traditions today are very similar.

GOALS OF THE HASH

• To promote physical fitness among our members

• To get rid of hangovers or develop new ones

• To acquire a good thirst and to satisfy it in beer

• To persuade the older members that they are not as old as they feel

WHAT TO BRING TO A HASH

Hash Cash, ID, extra cash or card for food/drinks after, a headlamp or flashlight if hashing within 2 hours of sunset, and most importantly, an open-minded sense of humor and adventure.

HASH CASH? 

Everyone attending the hash pays Hash Cash to help cover the cost of beer, our various websites, advertising, hash swag, and hash supplies.

NOTE: virgins (first timers) and hares hash for free.
